What Addiction Treatment Is Covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield?

It would be best if you had an in-depth conversation with your behavioral health provider because coverage will depend on your plan, and BCBS may cover at least part of the cost of the following behavioral health services:

A professional drug detox program often includes medically managed withdrawal and uses medications or other therapies to mitigate any potentially harmful side effects a person may experience as their body rids itself of a substance.

Inpatient Treatment

A highly structured live-in program where patients receive care from addiction professionals while remaining closely supervised with high accountability. This is highly beneficial for patients as it allows them some distance from stressors in the outside world so they can focus entirely on sobriety and recovery.

Outpatient Rehab Treatment

Outpatient programs are less intensive than inpatient or residential programs, but they still provide an appropriate treatment intensity to suit an individual’s needs and treatment goals. The flexibility of outpatient treatment does not require overnight stays and can occur in multiple settings. The levels of outpatient rehab treatment vary in intensity and usually consist of the following:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – This type of program is typically conducted over the course of a day but may include nights and weekends. Patients are provided with a full therapeutic schedule including group therapy, individual counseling, and other classes.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – This program is less intensive than a PHP and is suitable for individuals with obligations such as work or school. Treatment consists of individual counseling, group therapy, and other activities.
  • Outpatient Program (OP) – This is a standard outpatient treatment that offers the greatest degree of flexibility while still delivering therapeutic treatment and support for maintaining recovery.

If you’re struggling with substance use disorder or other mental health conditions, individual or group therapy sessions may be helpful to further understand the reasons why an individual may use substances and how they can change this behavior.

In the addiction treatment process, medications like suboxone or methadone may be used to wean patients off of a certain drug. The aim of this is to help individuals go through the withdrawal process and prevent relapse. Not all treatment centers offer medication-assisted treatment, however.

Always check what your BCBS insurance plan will and will not cover for an addiction rehab program.
