Types of Substance Use Disorders

One thing that almost all substance use disorders have in common is the change in a person’s behavior when they experience addiction. A person’s brain undergoes a change that causes them to experience intense, overwhelming cravings, which may lead them to change their behavior in an effort to use the substance again and again. This can happen even when the person knows that this continued use is causing harm to themselves or others.

Some examples of substances involved in substance use disorders include:

  • Alcohol
  • Opioid pain relievers
  • Illicit drugs such as cocaine
  • Stimulants such as methamphetamine
  • Cigarettes and other tobacco products

Alcohol addiction and drug addiction are some of the biggest health concerns in America, with thousands of deaths each year being directly attributable to long-term alcohol and drug use.

Do You Need Substance Use Disorder Treatment?

Since the use of many of these substances is so common, it may be hard to tell if you’ve developed an addiction. The behavior of seeking out substances as a form of recreation or relieving pain or trauma is normalized by the number of people doing it. Over time, the brain becomes so conditioned to using substances as a coping mechanism that it can be difficult to stop.

Signs of Substance Abuse

Some of the signs and symptoms that you are struggling with a substance use disorder may include any of the following:
