When Is it Time to Enroll in Substance Abuse Treatment Programs?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, drug overdose deaths have increased by 72%, with a 40% increase in 2020 alone.1 Many people turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the uncertainty of the pandemic and developed an addiction to alcohol, cocaine, heroin, or other toxic substances. Unfortunately, this has led to an increase in addiction rates and overdose deaths.

Addiction is a sneaky illness. It happens over time and depends on how often and in what quantity drugs or alcohol are consumed. One or two drinks at night turn into 3 or 4, and before you know it, you are dealing with withdrawals and ever-increasing cravings. Some of the common withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sweating
  • Diarrhea
  • Hallucinations
  • Insomnia
  • Feeling irritable
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

If you have tried quitting before and have trouble getting through withdrawals, it is time to consider enrolling in an addiction treatment program.

At Insight Recovery Center, we will discuss the differences between our partial hospitalization vs. intensive outpatient programs. We will go over the differences with you and answer any questions you have about the programs, medications used, and other questions about the recovery process.

Partial Hospitalization vs. Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program

Treating substance use disorder is possible through an accredited addiction treatment program. It uses behavioral therapies to treat the psychological side and medication to treat the physical side of addiction.

Here are some of the differences between partial hospitalization vs. intensive outpatient treatment:

What Is Partial Hospitalization?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is more intensive than outpatient treatment. It involves attending therapy sessions 5-7 days a week for 6-8 hours a day. The program’s focus is on stabilizing symptoms of substance use disorders by providing more comprehensive care that includes behavioral and holistic therapies and medication-assisted treatment. It is short but intense, lasting only 3-4 weeks.

Once complete, patients move on to the next stage of recovery, an intensive outpatient treatment program.

What Is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is the second stage of the recovery process. IOP is only for 3-5 days per week for 3-4 hours per day. It allows patients to adjust to living outside of therapy and slowly integrate back into their lives. Its focus is on continual therapy and working on improving coping and communication skills, relapse prevention skills, and other beneficial therapies.

This substance abuse treatment program generally lasts from 8-12 weeks but can be extended to several months.
