The Role of MAT in Addiction Recovery

smiling female therapist explains the role of MAT in addiction recovery

Using MAT for recovery is widely accepted and considered an effective treatment method for those dealing with substance use disorders. These medications offer temporary support for those going through addiction withdrawals and cravings and create a whole-person recovery experience. A medication-assisted treatment program is only available through an accredited addiction treatment program.

Insight Recovery Center welcomes individuals who are struggling with an addiction and want help in making a positive change in their lives. On day one, we will run a complete health assessment to determine the best course of action for addressing your substance use disorder. We use this information to create a tailored program employing evidence-based therapies and holistic approaches to deliver a comprehensive treatment and recovery experience.

What Drugs Are Used in MAT?

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several medications to treat the physical side effects of addictions. These drugs are safe to use when you follow the prescriptions and abstain from all future drugs or alcohol. If you abuse drugs or alcohol while on a MAT program, it can cause immediate side effects to begin.

The types of drugs involved with a medication-assisted treatment program include:

  • Methadone – Used to reduce cravings and control withdrawal symptoms. It must be taken daily and only available through an opioid treatment program.
  • Buprenorphine – Used to reduce cravings and control withdrawal symptoms. This drug can be taken at home daily or administered by medical staff.
  • Naltrexone – This is an opioid-blocking medication that reduces the euphoric effects of opioids. Naltrexone can be prescribed by any doctor and is taken daily at home or administered by medical staff through an accredited program.

These medications are only available when you enroll in an addiction treatment program and offer temporary support. Medical staff will administer medications and monitor patients for any adverse reactions. As symptoms wear off, they will begin tapering you off the medication until no longer necessary.

Insight Recovery Center supports individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder. Our MAT for addiction recovery provides a safe space for recovery where you can focus on getting healthy and sober.

The Benefits of Using MAT for Recovery

A medication-assisted treatment program has long been used to treat opioid use disorders for wealthy residents and civil war veterans. Today, it is available for anyone with a substance use disorder and is very effective in reducing withdrawals, cravings, and other disruptive symptoms.

Here are some of the benefits of using MAT for recovery:

  • A better way to get through detox – The first few days of recovery can be difficult, with very intense withdrawal symptoms, including nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, and bone and joint pain. Medication can reduce these and other symptoms during the first few weeks.
  • Decreases the risk of relapse and overdose – The risk of relapse is very high during the first few days. Withdrawal symptoms can peak around 72 hours, making it nearly impossible not to relapse. MAT for substance abuse treats withdrawals and cravings, making it possible to get through detoxing and continue with therapy.
  • Improves retention in the program – MAT for addiction allows patients to focus on the underlying reasons behind the abuse and begin the long road to recovery. In private sessions, therapists will dive deep to find the original reasons for the abuse and begin to develop coping skills for managing symptoms and triggers. Medication can give patients time to get through recovery safely and focus on their recovery.
  • Ongoing support – For patients with strong addictions, the road to recovery is more challenging due to depression, PTSD, or other mental health conditions contributing to the addiction. Medication-assisted treatment can ease anxiety and depressive symptoms for the length of the program and may continue for several months to years.

A MAT for addiction program has many benefits that you will experience during recovery. Therapists will continue to monitor your progress and adjust the treatment regimen if necessary.
